All of the -isms

The GED test requires students to know the differences between many of what my class calls "the -isms of social studies" - ranging from racism to imperialism to jingoism. Today, my students created flash cards to represent the -isms in text and picture form.

Tomorrow, we will revert to our younger selves and play a version of the classic Memory. We will scramble our cards and see who can remember which cards are where while correctly matching the definition with its picture/definition.

Go Go Garlic

Boston-

Domino's, a very well-liked pizza franchise, has launched a new $5.00 GGG deal.Which stands for Go Go Garlic. It's a bread bowl with tons and tons of garlic you can have.
"We are happy and very thrilled to announce our new deal, it's garlic and you can never have too much garlic," says chairman of Domino's, Brad Robinson.

Customers get to order any bread bowl, cheesy or regular, and inside fill it up with mountains of garlic. Yumm!!
"I think it's awesome; garlic never tasted so good," says Ian Summers, traveling all the way from San Diego to get a first taste of the garlic bowl.

Not only do you get a garlic bowl, we also throw in...that's right you guessed it MORE garlic. For customers who do not purchase a garlic bowl, they will have a minimum of $12.00 to purchase whatever else is on the menu. If you do purchase our garlic bowl, everything will be half off and you get a free cup of garlic.

"This will be mainstream.WE figured most people find the taste of garlic delicious and just couldn't have enough."says spokesman Kyle Mitchell.

"We are also working on branching our new garlic smoothie."chairman Robinson states.

Customers will be rolling in and money will be booming. The GGG deal will have the Domino's franchise in a place it has never been before. Although the FDA are concerned about the health of customers who consume too much garlic, Domino's is still moving forward and assures us that this is positively safe and customers will be find. "We can assure you this is safe and we would not launch this deal if we were concerned about our customers' health."

Switch It or Mix It

January 30, 2012

Boston-

During a Phantom Gourmet interview, Dave, their lead reporter, talked to the CEO of McDonald's, Joe Fisher. Joe Fisher has come up with an event called the Switch It or Mix It. This allows customers to either mix or switch between two opposite food categories at McDonald's, such as mixing sweet with savory.

Talking to some of the Boston residents about this event was interesting. Sally, a woman from Hyde Park, said, "nothing would be better than chocolate ice cream between a sesame bun." Another man from South Boston says, "wow, with all these different combinations that people have to pick I wonder if any of them would be as ridiculous as a ground meat and cheese milkshake. Just from these two people you should probably have an idea about how crazy this event will be.

After this event topic was presented to me, I had a question about the price of these crazy made-up meals. Fisher says, "no matter what combo or how much food as long as it's a Switch It or Mix It meal; its only $ 3.59."

Sounds like quite a relief seeing how the economy is down. Well, sounds like an interesting event, and Dave will be back in Boston at most local and participating McDonald's restaurants to see these crazy combos.

That 70s Show Prom Night

Eric Forman was never the popular guy. He never had any luck with girls, he never excelled in sports, and never got invited to any parties. But that was all going to change in one crazy night.
It was April of 2011 and Eric was determined to end the year with a bang. He ran into a couple of jocks in the hallway for their usual harassment. “Eric your such a dork, you always do things the right way” they continued “momma’s boy”, “teacher’s pet”. Eric finally made it out the locker and said “you know what fine, let’s make a bet”. The jocks looked at each other and seem interested.
“On prom night, I will steal a garbage truck, bring it to prom, and pour all the garbage in the auditorium for a senior prank.” Eric couldn’t believe what he had just said. “Under one condition” one jock says“you have to do all that while holding a sewing machine. sewing machine? Theses guys are just as dumb as they look. “Ok I am in.
Prom night had arrived and Eric was sweating bullets. He had hired a guy who knew someone with a truck he could borrow. Eric would wait for the guy outside the back door of the school. No way was Eric thinking about doing this on his own. Eric was so anxious that he took a walk in a near by park. “I can’t go through with this, I can’t, Eric said to himself. Eric looked around and noticed a truck. “Wait! Eric walked over and said “Henry? What are you doing here?” “Hey Eric I stole the truck you wanted” Eric was fraught with anger. “I thought u knew a guy who would let you borrow the truck, not steal it!” “Yeah well things got complicated” explained Henry “Hey kid I think you better get out of here, I think the cops are coming.” “The cops!!” Eric yelled.
Before Eric can say anything else Henry was on his way except he got so nervous he put the truck in reverse and then it landed in a ditch. Eric walked back to the bench and act like nothing happened. He noticed his grandma’s sewing machine still on the bench and almost forgot it went along with this ridiculous bet. He was far enough away from the scene so the cops wouldn’t question him.
The cops arrived with what seems to look like the owner of the truck. Eric started walking when a police officer stops him. “Hey young man!” shouted the officer Eric turned around feeling wary. “I need to ask you some questions son” “did u see what happened here?” “Umm no, no officer I was on way to my grandma’s and bring her  sewing machine back. Eric said. “well your well dress to be going to your grandma’s house. “Well officer….Officer Richards the officer interrupts Eric. “Well officer Richards, I’m on my way to prom. Eric couldn’t believe how well his story came together. “Well you get on your way don’t want you to be late for prom, ahh the good old days” Officer Richards says as he linger into his thoughts. “Well ok” Eric says uncomfortably.
Officer Richards walked away. Just then Eric knew his plan failed. “Oh my camara.” Eric reached in his pocket and grabbed his camera his mom gave him. He seen a man walked by and says “Hey can u take my picture please?” “yeah sure kid.” Eric had a picture to prove these jocks even though his plan fail through he still accomplish the unthinkable. Well at least in his mind.

Stitching the Unexplainable

It was Tuesday, January 3, 1998. Tony and his classmate Jon were making a low-budget movie for their film class but things took a turn for the worse. Tony had rented a small 4x4 truck, and Jon  rented a UPS truck but with Jon having severe ADHD looked over the paper work and didn’t actually sign the paper. Jon took the keys out of the truck owner's hands and took off fast to get to the place where Tony wanted to shoot the movie. They were ready to shoot the first scene. Tony had a hitch on the back of the small truck so they towed the UPS truck down a small hill next to a field to make the truck look like it had rolled down the hill. Tony got in front of the camera to say a few lines but then Jon saw the cops and remembered that he didn’t sign the paper. He took off running because he didn’t want his juvie record to catch up with him.

Inhale to Exhale: Breathe Life

The question of the day is who is this mysterious person talking to the police? I am a photojournalist talking to John Crops on his scoop of today’s events. John has no clue about what happened, but as you can see, his day seems to be starting off right. He said he has to get his suit tailored today by his grandmother for his big day. His brother is to get married, and he is to be the best man.

The facts are clear: the cops have arrived, and the mysterious man has wandered back to the truck. In my opinion, he walked back because he realized he needed his jacket, but he said the truck flung out off control. Many people contested he wasn’t at fault, but in fact, he went to get help. After the cops examined the evidence they think he might be under the influence of drugs because he hasn’t been able to get his story together about how the truck actually ended up on the wrong side off the park. He stated he needed to take a walk to breathe [inhale and exhale]. I would imagine we all know how this will end.

The truck driver, Erick Walls, is being charged with driving under the influence, destroying public property, and driving with an invalid drivers license. He is to serve 260 days of community service, and his driver license is to be revoked.

Euphorically Skipping Across the Grassy Fields

It was a pretty nice, warmer than usual, mellow winter’s day and Robert was getting ready to go to the prom. He was all packed up and dressed to near perfection.
Robert left his house around noon. It was an exciting day and he just wouldn’t stop smiling. On his way to school, where the prom takes place, Robert picked me up and we were off. I was his trusty cameraman whose date was at home with the chickenpox, of all days, huh?
Since it was such a beautiful day, we took the scenic route through the park. On our way to the “Coming of Age” dance, Robert stumbled across a tiny sewing machine that was casually sitting there on the grass. It was slightly dented but looked as if it worked. At that moment, he remembered his grandma needed one but was too old and senile to be trusted with one. Because he loves his granny so much, he took it regardless of the condition it was in; not every day do you find tailoring items on the ground.
So we were off again, skipping across the grassy fields, not a worry in sight. Just as we were about to leave, we saw a van carrying mail half-submerged down by the river with the driver standing groggily on the edge of the bank being interrogated by the fuzz. We were flabbergasted and enthralled by how random this day was. Since Rob was holding a possibly obsolete piece of machinery in his hand with a huge smile on his already joyful face, and my date had the chickenpox, we both agreed to take a photo of Robert standing in front of the crash site. And so we did. Our journey continued and we skipped and giggled euphorically together in unison across the grassy, flowery fields.

My Last Senior Night

This is probably one of the craziest days I have had in a long time. By the way, my name is Peter, and I need to tell you about my day. Wow! So I am walking over to my buddy’s house to bring his mom’s sewing machine back and as I am walking down central I watch this delivery guy drive his truck through a field and into a hill. The guy gets out of the truck and is just oblivious to the fact that I am standing not too far from him watching him kicking the ground, swearing, and just being completely upset because of what has happened. Basically what I got from all of his dancing and profane words is that he fell asleep for a split second and woke up with his truck halfway up a grass hill. So I decided to stick around and watch this because it’s fairly nice outside and it’s really early in the morning which means not much to do. Maybe ten minutes later the cops are on the sidewalk talking to the guy about the reason for his truck being parked where it is. The guys eyes are blood shot and he’s standing there with his arms crossed acting like this is not his fault. He told a lie saying that something in the truck went wrong and caused him to lose control and hit the hill.  The funny thing is my buddy is all the way down the street trying to get away from this area. I think this high school prank is a perfect way to end my senior year. The reason I am just standing here with the sewing machine and a big smile on my face is because, yes, I’m returning the sewing machine. We had to do this before the prom tonight. He should think about his attitude and where he parks his truck on school grounds because anyone can slip a little sleep aid into his drink. He will have to sleep on this one.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”
                                        Martin Luther king Jr.
During Martin Luther King Jr.'s time, he wanted to see things change. However, he knew that if he responded to the situations during the Civil Rights Movement, only more hatred would be created. For example, if you hate someone for hating you, then you don’t create the love you want. One good example is being treated unfairly, and if you want changes, either social or personal, you can’t do it by just hating enemies. If you feel hatred and want to change it to love, you need to be a better person. Being a better person would allow you to love your adversaries.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that" -MLK

‘In a sense darkness can only be driven out by light in the way that people are so dark and mysterious that only someone with a good soul or light if you will can bring them out of that funk or state of mind. Hate is like darkness friend, in a way that they go hand in hand and love is the only solution to bring out the good in people.

Good vs. Evil

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness ; only light can do that . hate cannot drive out hate ; only love can do that” …

Martin Luther King jr .

Bad cannot take out  bad as in good can take out bad … good vs … evil
Darkness cannot see darkness only light can see through the darkness
You cant get rid of hate with hate it will only get worse you can only do that with love because either way people will hate that to like take bad things in life and compare them with the good things … kind of like kindness for weakness … you should treat outhers the way they want to be treated … if you treat someone badly they will treat you badly if u treat them good the same will happen to you so therefore you have so show consideration for outhers …

Clashing with the Darkness

                                                                 Clashing

“Darkness can’t be driven out by darkness only light can do this.”
                                                      Martin Luther King Jr.
People can have a dark aura around them sometimes and people may want to kind of fight fire with fire. But two wrong don’t make it right. Try to yell or fight a person with a bad attitude clash, friction it won’t work. Try being nice and just leaving the situation alone if you can’t deal with it or try to understand where the person is darkness comes from. Cause and effect is known in science and there is a kind of science when dealing with people. If you say hi people will say hi back when you say bye people say see you later if a person is in a bad mood why not try to figure out where this anger comes from you might just touch someone and change their whole persona and make a good positive change in a person life.
Sincerely,
     Malissie R.H.

Recycled Hatered

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, olny light can do that,  hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that" MLK
this quote means recycled hatered at the time that MLK thought this.  when i say recycled krama if thires olny darkness hate evilness ignorance, its all going to keep going round in a cycle, but if one peson were to enter that darkness with a little light  and love , that little love and light can can do so much for that darkness.

" DARKNESS CANNOT DRIVE OUT DARKNESS ; ONLY LIGHT CAN DO THAT. HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE; ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT" - MARTIN LUTHER KING JR

I BELIEVE THAT THIS QUOTE MEANS THAT BEING HATEFUL DOESNT SLOVE PROBLEMS OR ISSUES . IF SOMEONE IS BEING MEAN OR DISRESPECTFUL DOESNT MEAN YOU HAVE TO DO THE SAME. AS I GOT OLDER I REALIZED I DO NOT HAVE TO BE HATEFUL IT BRINGS ME AND OTHERS DOWN. IF I DONT LIKE A PERSON I STILL HAVE TO RESPECT THEM BECAUSE I WOULD WANT THE TO DO THE SAME FOR ME.
